Australia’s Parliamentary Inquiry into 5G: Where to next?

In May 2020 Astrolabe Associate Geof Heydon was a guest on the Smart Cities Chronicles podcast, hosted by Adam Beck from the Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand.

With all the promise and excitement around 5G there is an equal amount of concern and hesitation. The discussion for the episode is motivated by the release of The Next Gen Future – an Australian Government report detailing findings of the inquiry into the deployment, adoption and application of 5G in Australia.

Their conversation covers communication and citizen engagement, health, infrastructure sharing and the level of 5G literacy across Australia’s local government landscape. As 5G begins to roll out in some Australian cities Geof and Adam explore important considerations for local governments and how to balance new infrastructure, technology and partnerships.

Geof also discusses his observations from decades of expertise in the Internet of Things and his leading work with the City of Melbourne’s 5G testbed initiative.
